Hikone Castle
Hikone Castle was built over 400 years ago and its main castle tower was designated as a national treasure. Hikone Castle is very unique in that there still remains a lot of time-honored buildings with the atmosphere of the Edo period surrounding the castle grounds.

Tenbin-yagura (Important National Cultural Asset) and Roka-bashi
The stone walls of Tenbin-yagura, a small fortified structure, come into sight after a breathless walk from the Omotemon-gate. This sight may make you feel like you have returned to the Japanese Samurai era, about 400 years ago.
Tenbin-yagura has quite a unique shape. Its symmetric shape with the Roka-bashi bridge, dividing the building at the center, makes it resemble an old style balancing scale, or Tenbin in Japanese.
The stone walls, Tenbin-yagura and Roka-bashi have many stories to share. Why don't you come and experience what they have to offer?

Main Castle Tower (National Treasure)
Climbing Hikoneyama-hill, you can see a magnificent original three‐storied main castle tower standing on a sturdy stone base.
Various kinds of roof styles are gracefully arranged. In contrast, look out windows and secret rooms are carefully placed inside the tower. You can also enjoy the wonderful view of Lake Biwa and the castle town from the top of the tower.
Genkyu-en Garden
This is a typical daimyo garden. It was built in the 1670's and named after the Chinese imperial villa in the 8th century. You will enjoy the wonderful changing views walking along the path around the pond. It often provides a good location for shooting films.
